Why Fence Paint Won’t Stick — and How to Get It Right

You did everything right. Dry day, decent product, two coats, careful cutting in around the posts. Six months later it is flaking off in sheets, or it never took properly in the first place and sat on the surface in patches like water on a waxed car.

It is almost never the paint. In nearly every case it comes down to one of three things, and all three are decided before the tin is opened.

In short

  • Paint fails on fences for three reasons: the timber was damp, there is an oil-based finish underneath, or the panels were too new.
  • New pressure-treated panels need to weather before they will take a coating. Six months minimum, a year is better.
  • Splash water on the timber. If it beads, nothing water-based will stick. If it soaks in and darkens, the surface is open.
  • Green growth has to be killed and washed off, not painted over. It keeps growing underneath and pushes the coating off from behind.

The three reasons paint will not stick to a fence

One: the timber was still damp

Timber that feels dry to the hand can be carrying a great deal of moisture a few millimetres in. Put a coating over it and that moisture has to leave somehow — so it pushes out through the film, which blisters, then lifts.

Two days without rain is the usual minimum, and in a Manchester autumn that is not the same as two days of dry weather. A north-facing boundary in October can stay damp for a week after the last shower. Shaded fences beside a hedge or under trees are worse again, because the air never moves through them.

The other half of this is what happens afterwards. Coating timber in the morning and having rain on it that evening, before the film has properly formed, will ruin the job as thoroughly as coating damp wood in the first place. What matters is the forecast for the following forty-eight hours, not the hour you start.

Two: there is an oil or spirit-based finish underneath

This is the one that catches most people, because the old finish is often invisible. Traditional fence treatments and older decking stains are largely spirit or oil based, and they leave a water-repellent residue in the surface of the timber that lasts for years.

Put a modern water-based stain over that and it beads, patches and lifts within a season. The water in the product is being actively repelled by the surface it is supposed to be soaking into. No amount of extra coats fixes it, and a second coat usually makes it look worse.

It works the other way too, though less dramatically. A spirit-based product over a sound water-based film cannot penetrate, so it sits on top and wears off quickly.

Three: the panels were brand new

Pressure-treated fence panels leave the timber yard saturated. The preservative is forced into the wood under pressure, and the panels arrive still wet with it — which is why new fencing often has a green tinge and feels heavier than you expect.

Until that has dried out and the surface has weathered a little, there is nothing for a coating to key into. Paint it in its first month and it will shed, and the homeowner will reasonably conclude the paint was rubbish.

Bare, untreated timber is the opposite case. That wants a preservative on it promptly, because it has no protection at all and the cut ends will start drinking water immediately.

How long to leave new pressure-treated panels

Longer than anyone wants to hear. Six months is a realistic minimum, and a full year is better on an exposed boundary — a Pennine-edge garden takes more weather than a sheltered town-centre yard, and dries differently.

Three signs that it is ready:

  • The green has gone. New treated timber fades from green to a silvery or honey brown as it weathers.
  • Water soaks in rather than beading. The test below.
  • It feels dry and looks matt rather than faintly damp and slightly waxy.

If you genuinely cannot wait — a new fence that looks stark against a finished garden is a real problem — the option is a product the manufacturer specifically states is suitable for newly treated timber. Read the tin rather than assume. Most are not.

Working out what is already on the timber

Two tests, both of which take a minute and save an entire job.

The water test. Flick or splash water onto the timber in a few places, including a shaded section and a weathered one. If it beads and sits there, the surface is repelling water and something oily is in it — nothing water-based will bond. If it soaks in and darkens the wood within a few seconds, the surface is open and ready.

The white spirit test. Rub a cloth dampened with white spirit over a small area. If colour transfers onto the cloth, you are dealing with a spirit-based stain and the new product needs to match it.

The failure pattern tells you something too. A finish that has flaked off in sheets was film-forming — a paint or an opaque stain that sat on the surface and lost its grip. A finish that has simply faded and washed pale was a penetrating stain, which is far better news: penetrating finishes wear away rather than peel, so you clean the timber down and recoat without stripping anything.

Worth knowing before you choose: penetrating stains and oils are lower maintenance over a decade than film-forming paints, because when they fail they fail gracefully. A painted fence eventually needs taking back. A stained one needs another coat.

Green growth: why washing matters more than the paint

Shaded and low-level timber grows algae, moss and lichen readily, and the north and east sides of a garden stay damp long enough for all three. It shows as the green film on a fence panel and the black speckling on a deck.

Painting over it achieves nothing. The growth is alive, it carries on living under the coating, and it lifts the film off from behind — usually within a season, and always starting in the shadiest section.

The treatment is a fungicidal wash, applied and left to dwell for as long as the product says rather than rinsed straight off, then washed down and allowed to dry thoroughly. On an exposed or heavily shaded elevation it will need repeating every few years, because the conditions that caused it have not changed.

One caution on pressure washers. They shift growth quickly, but on softwood they also raise the grain and drive water deep into the timber. If one is used, the fence then needs considerably longer to dry before anything goes on it.

Spray or brush?

Both, depending on the run.

Spraying is far quicker across a long stretch of panel or close-board fencing, and it drives product into the grain and into the gaps between boards in a way a brush struggles to. It is the sensible choice wherever there is enough fencing to justify masking up. Wind is the limiting factor — overspray onto a neighbour’s car is not a conversation anyone wants.

Brushing suits short runs, gates, trellis, and anything tight against planting or a boundary where overspray is a risk.

Whichever is used, three places are always done by hand: the cut ends, the post tops and the bottom rail. End grain drinks several times more than the face of a board, and it is where rot starts on every fence that has ever rotted.

Decking: cleaning, degreasing and the slip problem

Decking is the most demanding surface in a garden, because it is horizontal. It holds water rather than shedding it, it grows algae in the grooves, and it gets walked on.

It also gets greasy, which people forget. A deck with a barbecue on it carries cooking grease in the timber, and nothing bonds through that. Cleaning means a proper deck cleaner, a stiff brush worked along the grain rather than across it, and a thorough rinse — followed by real drying time, ideally a couple of dry days rather than a couple of dry hours.

On slip: any coating on horizontal timber in a shaded garden will become slick over time. If the deck is a route to the back gate rather than an ornament, specify an anti-slip decking finish or an anti-slip additive from the start. Retrofitting grip to a slippery deck is a much worse job than building it in.

Oil or paint is the other decision. Decking oil penetrates and fades gradually, so maintenance is a clean and another coat. Decking paint forms a film, looks sharper initially, and eventually peels in the traffic areas — at which point it has to come off. On a deck that is actually used, oil is usually the lower-maintenance answer.

Sheds, summerhouses and timber cladding

Three things decide how long a garden building’s finish lasts, and only one of them is the coating.

  • Ground contact. Timber sitting directly on wet soil or paving will rot from the bottom regardless of what is painted on it. Bearers, feet or a gravel margin are worth more than an extra coat.
  • Knots. Softwood cladding bleeds resin through pale finishes as brown or yellow stains. A knotting solution over the knots first stops it.
  • End grain and board ends. Cut ends on cladding and shiplap absorb water fastest. They are sealed before the boards go up where possible, and by hand afterwards where not.

Summerhouses and garden rooms are worth treating as buildings rather than sheds — they hold furniture, they are often heated intermittently, and a failed finish costs more than a coat of paint to put right.

Metal gates, railings and garage doors

Metalwork follows different rules from timber, and one of them is absolute: rust must be treated before anything is applied.

A coating over rust does not stop it. The corrosion continues underneath, expands, and lifts the new paint off within a year, usually in exactly the places you could see it before. Rust is taken back to sound metal, treated, and then given a system designed for the job — either a direct-to-metal product or a suitable primer and topcoat.

Galvanised metal is a special case. New galvanising is too smooth and too reactive for ordinary paint to grip. It needs either weathering for a season or a mordant solution or etch primer first. Painting straight onto new galv is one of the quickest failures in the trade.

The best time of year for garden timber

April to September, in practice, across Greater Manchester. What you need is timber that is dry, a settled spell ahead of you, and surface temperatures above roughly five to eight degrees.

Two things people get wrong at either end of that window. In autumn, the mornings stay damp far later than they look, and the drying window each day is short — a coating applied at four in the afternoon in October may still be soft when the dew lands on it. And in high summer, full sun on a dark fence panel dries the product before it can penetrate, which leaves a coating sitting on the surface rather than in the timber. Follow the shade round the garden rather than working straight through.

When to call a professional

Painting a fence is honestly one of the more DIY-able jobs there is. It is not skilled work, the products are widely available, and a brush and a dry weekend will get most gardens done.

The two reasons to hand fence painting over are scale and equipment. A long boundary, several fences, a deck and a summerhouse is days of work, and spraying makes short work of what brushing makes into a fortnight.

The third reason is the judgement, which is what this whole article is about. Knowing whether the timber is ready, what is already on it, and whether the growth has been properly killed is the difference between a finish that lasts four years and one that fails by spring.

Expect to repeat the wash every few years on the worst elevation.
