On timber, preparation is the whole argument
Roughly 60 per cent of time on site is preparation, and outdoor timber is the clearest example of why. A fence that is dirty, damp or still carrying an old oily treatment will reject a new coating no matter what goes on top of it. Surfaces are washed down, allowed to dry, and checked before anything is applied.

Why Outdoor Timber Fails, and What Actually Fixes It
Nearly every complaint about garden timber comes back to the same three situations. None of them are the paint's fault, and all three are avoidable.
Coating brand-new fence panels
Pressure-treated panels arrive saturated with preservative. Until that has dried and the timber has weathered, a coating has nothing to key into and simply sheds. Six months is a realistic minimum, and a full year is better on an exposed Marple boundary.
Putting water-based over oil-based
Most older fence treatments are spirit or oil based. A water-based stain applied straight over one beads, patches and lifts within a season. The existing finish has to be identified first, and the new one matched to it — or the timber taken back properly.
Coating over green growth
Marple's shaded, damp elevations grow algae and moss readily. Painted over, the growth keeps living underneath and pushes the coating off from behind. A fungicidal wash first, left to work and rinsed down, is the difference between three years and one.

Marple House Painting FAQs
Why won't paint or stain stick to my fence?
Usually one of three things. The timber was still damp, so the coating never keyed. There is an old oil or spirit-based treatment underneath and a water-based product has been put over it. Or the panels were brand new and still full of preservative. Identifying which one it is takes a couple of minutes on site and saves doing the whole fence twice.
How long should new fence panels be left before treating?
Longer than most people expect. Pressure-treated timber leaves the yard saturated, and until that has dried out and the surface has weathered, a coating has nothing to grip. Six months is a realistic minimum and a full year is better on an exposed Marple or Mellor boundary. Bare untreated timber is different — that wants a preservative on it promptly.
Do you spray fences or brush them?
Both, depending on the run. Spraying is far quicker across a long stretch of panel or close-board fencing and gets into the grain properly, so it is the usual choice where there is enough of it to justify masking up. Short runs, gates and anything tight against planting or a neighbour's boundary are brushed. Cut ends and post tops are always done by hand.
Can decking be painted, and does it get slippery?
It can, though decking is a maintenance commitment rather than a one-off. Boards are cleaned and degreased first — grease and grime sit deep in the grooves and nothing bonds over them. Any coating on a horizontal surface in a damp, shaded Marple garden will grow slick over time, so an anti-slip additive or finish is worth specifying from the start.
Why does the shaded side of my house keep going green?
North and east elevations here stay damp for long stretches, and algae only needs moisture and shade. It is not a fault in the paint. Painting straight over it traps living growth underneath, which then pushes the new coating off from behind. A fungicidal wash, left to work and rinsed properly, deals with it — and it will need repeating every few years on an exposed elevation.
Do you paint garage doors, metal gates and railings?
Yes. Metalwork is a different job from timber — rust is treated back to sound material first, then a direct-to-metal system goes on, because rust left underneath simply travels and lifts the new coat within a year. Up-and-over garage doors are prepared the same way, and hinges and running gear are masked rather than coated.
