Houses built before roughly 1919 were designed to let moisture move through the walls and evaporate away. Modern coatings are designed to keep moisture out. Put one on the other and the water has nowhere to go.

Do you paint sash windows without painting them shut?
Yes, and it is the question we are asked most in Bowdon. Paint is kept off the running surfaces, staff beads and parting beads are handled carefully, and the sashes are moved before the coating cures rather than left to set solid. A sash that has already been painted shut can usually be freed, though that is joinery work as much as decorating and is quoted as such.
Can a Victorian solid-wall house be painted without causing damp?
It can, provided the coating breathes. Houses built before roughly 1919 have no cavity, so the wall relies on moisture passing through and evaporating away. A modern impermeable masonry paint blocks that route, and the moisture then works out through the plaster inside or spalls the face off the brick. Vapour-permeable mineral paints and limewash keep that path open.
What paint should be used on lime plaster?
Something breathable — mineral or clay-based emulsions, or traditional limewash. Standard vinyl emulsion seals the surface and can lift as the plaster moves. Loose distemper has to come off first, since nothing modern bonds to it. On patched or newly repaired lime, a mist coat goes on before any full coat.
Can old paint be stripped back from ornate cornice and ceiling roses?
Yes. Decades of build-up soften the detail on cornice, corbels and roses, and the difference once it is cut back is considerable. The work is slow and it is quoted separately from ordinary redecoration, because it is restoration rather than painting. Once cleared, the detail is rebuilt in thin coats so it never fills again.
Should skirting boards be painted the same colour as the walls?
In a period room it often works well. Colour-drenching the skirtings, architraves and walls in one shade makes a small room feel larger and stops deep Victorian skirtings chopping the wall in half. Where the original mouldings are the best feature, however, a contrasting trim is worth keeping. We sample both on the wall before committing.
